Winding down from a hectic holiday season, we all need a little “me time.” Once you’ve had some time to recoup, however, you’ll find that there’s more than enough to get you back into the social swing of things this month! No matter what you choose to do, the array of events scattered throughout the Emerald City will allow you to kick off 2018 with a bang. To get you started, here’s our list of 5 things to do in Seattle this January.
New Year’s in Seattle – December 31-January 1

Undoubtedly the most-watched fireworks show in the area, the NYE pyrotechnics transform the Space Needle into a super-sized sparkler. Claim a spot along South Lake Union to take in the spectacle or opt for tickets to Spectra 2018 and watch the show from under the Pacific Science Center arches, along with local DJs and an open bar.
If that doesn’t sound like quite enough festivity (you party animal, you), the Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP) is throwing a New Year’s Eve bash aptly called Indulgence. With more than 20 bars (yep, you read that right), four unique party atmospheres and three areas of live entertainment, there’s bound to be something enticing for everyone in your group!
Bavarian Icefest 2018 – January 13-14

Leavenworth is a town that celebrates winter with gusto. From their renowned Christmas Lighting Festival to an abundance of snow-centric activities (dog sledding, snowshoeing and ice climbing just to name a few) to even a local brewery named after an icicle, you’ll find no shortage of options for “wintertainment!” Join the town in celebrating all things frozen at their annual Bavarian Icefest, with a lineup that includes snow sculpture competitions, ice cube tower building, a snowmobile sled pull and live ice carving. We think even Jack Frost himself would approve!
Children’s Film Festival Seattle – January 25-February 10
Produced by the Northwest Film Forum, the Children’s Film Festival Seattle celebrates the best and brightest in international cinema for children. Each year, films from dozens of countries are selected and highlighted at this cinematic extravaganza, alongside live performances, animation tutorials and hands-on education workshops, all crafted with care for the next generation of movie lovers.
Seattle Boat Show – January 27-February 4
Did your last ride aboard the Clipper leave you wanting a boat of your own? Head to the Seattle Boat Show and learn the ins and outs of everything from stand up paddleboards to super yachts! Be sure to dive into some of the events and attractions at this year’s show, like free heated boat rides on South Lake Union or their Sails & Ales craft beer tasting night.
Washington Belgian Fest – January 28

Beer aficionados rejoice! The 9th Annual Belgian Fest brings some warmth to the mid-winter chill. In keeping with its unique style, all beers are brewed with Belgian yeast. Sample a lineup of frothy suds from breweries such as Bale Breaker Brewing, Flying Lion Brewing and Optimism Brewing Co. Prost!
We all know how it goes. Between braving crowds at the mall and spending quality time with the family, it’s tough to get out and enjoy the lively city we’re lucky enough to call home. Well, it’s a new year folks! So why not resolve to explore everything Seattle has to offer in 2018? Whether you’re into cultural exploration, local craft beer or good old-fashioned ice carving, you’ll find plenty of activities to help achieve that New Year’s resolution!
Clipper Recommends:
- Opt for an outdoor adventure at Mount Rainier, Olympic National Park or the North Cascades on Free Entrance Day in the National Parks.
- If your first act of the new year is to dive into icy water in the dead of winter, you can do anything. Join in an annual tradition by jumping into Lake Washington at Seattle’s Polar Bear Plunge!
