It’s already week two of August and if you’re like us, you’re starting to ramp up your summer activities before the Seattle rain returns. Luckily, we’ve got a full lineup for your week. Whether you’re into music, outdoor movies or art exhibitions, we’ll point you in the right direction.
Rave of Thrones featuring Kristian Nairn: August 11
Calling all Game of Thrones fans. Kicking the weekend off early, Kristian Nairn, also known as George R.R. Martin’s character Hodor, brings his DJ set to Seattle. When he’s not holding doors, he’s touring dance floors across the seven kingdoms. He’s no stranger to Seattle. This is his second visit to our fair city for an all-ages show at the Neptune Theatre.
Bainbridge Island Studio Tour: August 12-14
Want to get out of town? Just a 30-minute ferry ride from Seattle, Bainbridge Island is chock full of quaint shops and restaurants. We never leave without a scone or croissant from Blackbird Bakery followed with a trip to the modern-yet-rustic Storyville Coffee Roasting Studio.

To make your island experience truly memorable, check out the island-wide Studio Tour this Friday through Sunday during a weekend celebration of the arts. Featuring nine venues and studios, Bainbridge once again proves itself as being “The Heart of Local Art.”

At 6:30 p.m., experience the Art of Jazz as the Theoretics seamlessly blend instrumentals with soulful vocals. Activities run until 8:00p.m. On Saturday, find inner peace during a free outdoor yoga flow class with instructors from 8 Limbs Yoga. Be sure to bring your own mat!

Every year, South Lake Union lets its hair down and turns up the tunes. Be a part of SLU’s largest neighborhood celebration this Friday and come enjoy free vibes at the SLU Block Party. Treat your eardrums to the dreamy, electric sounds of Beat Connection and Hibou, among other great artist spotlights.
Hungry? SLU’s food trucks will be out in full force all day long, many of which will be at the corner of John Street and Ninth Avenue. Track down Lumpia World or the Top Pot Doughnuts truck, as well as Whole Food’s famous Best Burger Grilling Competition. Thirsty? Brave Horse Tavern will keep you cool with their selection of local craft brews in their beer garden from the likes of Fremont Brewing and Deschutes.
We also recommend checking out the Steamroller Smackdown presented by the School of Visual Concepts, a poster-making contest featuring top local designers. The festival offers a full day of activities that don’t stop until 11:00 p.m., so come and celebrate into the night!
Rainier Valley Culturefest Weekend: August 13-14
Experience the diverse cultures of South Seattle this weekend at the Rainier Valley Culturefest. The event kicks off with the Heritage Parade down Rainier Ave on Saturday, so be sure to find a spot along Columbia City’s main strip for a good view. The following day, head over to Othello Park to enjoy a dynamic lineup of performances beginning with Somali performers and Vietnamese lion dancers as well as arts & crafts, food trucks and a live camel!

Coinciding with Culturefest are two more special South Seattle events that we always are sure to put on our must-do list. Pull out your blankets and camp chairs for Columbia City’s Cinema Under the Stars this Saturday, which features Zootopia at Columbia Park at 8:00 p.m. Come Sunday evening, check out the Columbia City Beatwalk, Seattle’s second-Sunday music festival! Catch live performances from groups such as Garlic Gulch Boys and Fred Hoadley Trio all evening in multiple venues, as well buskers on the street.
We hope to see you out and about this week! Keep an eye on our Facebook and Twitter feeds for event updates, and remember to pack sunblock, sunburn happens to the best of us, even in Seattle.
Clipper Recommends:
- Take advantage of the sunny weather while we still have it and plan a trip to Seattle. Trust us, these clear, blue skies won’t last forever!
- Love animals? See what the local marine wildlife is up to and hop aboard the San Juan Clipper for a whale-watching excursion.
