Flu Cruises End

On October 21st Victoria Clipper began offering Americans an opportunity to travel to Victoria for a flu shot. Due to the high interest in Victoria as a getaway destination, the reasonable cost for the vaccine and transportation package, and the challenges of getting the vaccine in the USA, Clipper experienced an immediate and overwhelming response from the public, especially from senior citizens.

At the time this program began, our good friends and neighbors to the north indicated that an ample supply of vaccine was available and welcomed American visitors to their clinics. Since then, many Canadian clinics, including those in Victoria, have experienced a higher than usual domestic demand for flu shots. The increased demand may be fueled partly by concern that Canadian vaccine supplies could be overtaxed by the large number of vaccine-seeking Americans entering Canada through all border states.

Clipper understands and respects that Canada's first priority for allocation of the flu vaccine is to its own citizens and will discontinue taking new reservations for the flu shot program effective immediately, according to Darrell E. Bryan, Executive Vice President. Although we are pleased to have been able to help many American senior citizens and other high-risk people, without a guaranteed supply of vaccine available through our partner clinic in Victoria to dispense to visiting Americans, it would be irresponsible for us to continue to sell the flu shots at this time.

Mr. Bryan indicated that the appreciation conveyed by passengers for this opportunity has been overwhelming and heartwarming. Although disappointed about the current unavailability of additional vaccines, Clipper will continue to monitor the situation and to provide updated information as changes occur.
